What the Heck is Multi-Room Audio?

Multi-room audio is a term that has been thrown around for the last couple of years and it means what you would expect; an audio setup spread over multiple rooms. Don’t be fooled into thinking setting up the perfect multi-room system is an easy feat…there are quite a number of things to consider such as brands and platforms which offer different experiences and compatibility with multiple audio platforms.

Let’s take a look at what setting up a multi-room setup actually entails. Having a multi-room audio setup enables the user to stream the same music across different rooms, different music across different rooms or specific music on specific speakers. In general multi-room systems tend to work wirelessly and can be controlled using an application on your phone. A home wi-fi network is required to connect speakers and connect to the audio streaming platform.

Now that we have general overview on multi-room systems, let’s look at one of the current industry leaders in multi-room audio systems; Bang & Olufsen.

Bang & Olufsen Multi-room Audio

The Danish brand have launched their own platform called BeoLink Multi-room which is used to stream music across their system. B&O put an emphasis on simplicity and stylish design, perfect for designer homes. Speakers can be switched on or off effortlessly with a single touch and a wide range of audio devices are available, so you can mix and match according to your taste.

Behind every great audio system is an even greater control hub, which, in this case comes in the form of the BeoMusic app. The application is available on both Android and iOS devices and pulls music from your smartphone, audio streaming service and home library. The app can also be used to add more speakers and even old school devices like turntables for all you music purists out there 😉

Overall, albeit on the pricey side, B&O remain leaders when it comes to multi-room audio, perfectly harmonising functionality and form.
