Portability plays a huge factor when making a purchase, especially when it comes to wireless speakers. We’re taking a look at Bang and Olufsen’s take on portable speakers; the BeoPlay A1 & A2.

BeoPlay A1

Design

The A1 has a more unconventional design to it, looking more like a fire alarm than a portable speaker…but don’t be fooled by this timid design this speaker packs a punch.

Unsurprisingly, the build quality is super solid. The speaker weighs in at around 600g and fits nicely in the palm of your hand. Round on all sides with no protruding buttons, the A1 makes sure no buttons can be snagged when attached to a backpack, which brings us to our next feature; the leather strap. Testament to how B&O take design very seriously, the leather strap adds a more authentic feel to tie everything together.

Features

The speaker comes with 2 sockets; 3.5mm input and USB type-C for charging, and embedded buttons for power, bluetooth and volume are spread around the speaker’s edge. A “circle symbol” button is also present to reconnect the last connected device and continue playing music from where you left off.

Sound

The A1’s 20mm tweeter and 9cm driver are very impressive. The speaker produces loud and crisp sound which is surprising when you consider how small the device is. Mids and highs are very crisp and vocals sound clear as well as great guttural bass…the A1 is a polished, palm sized, powerhouse!

BeoPlay A2

Design

The A2 has a modern and very eye catching look and comes in three different colours; black, green and grey. The device is made out of aluminum but the front grill is made of sturdy plastic instead. This enables the grill to be removed to reveal the drivers inside. Like the A1, the A2 comes with a handy leather strap which you can use to carry the device.

Features

The speaker has three buttons; power, volume up/down and bluetooth and setting up the device is very straight forward. AUX and USB ports are present so you can bypass bluetooth or charge other devices using the speaker. The devices also has an impressive battery life of 24 hours but as with all portable speakers, this varies depending on how loud you play your music.

Sound

The device is powered by two sets of ¾ inch tweeters, two 3 inch drivers and two 3 inch passive bass radiators which offer clear and powerful sound. The speaker places more importance on highs and mids but that doesn’t mean the bass is lacking, in fact the bass is solid and does not distort on higher volumes.

Beoplay P2

Design

The P2 is shaped like a pebble; rounded, smooth, fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and comes in three different colours; black, sand stone and royal blue. The top of the device is made up of aluminium which gives it a clean and solid feel while the underside is made up of a softer polymer which gives the P2 a tactile and refined appearance. Portability is a key selling point with this device as the P2 fits perfectly in your pocket or tucked away in one’s handbag.

Features

The P2 is designed to be taken anywhere and everywhere. The device is fully portable and also dust and splash proof, so listening to that banger at the beach is a real possibility!

The device also comes with some nifty smart features which can be tweaked using the Beoplay App. Following B&Os minimalistic design, physical buttons have been removed and replaced with intuitive “tap” and “shake” interactions.

Sound

The sound produced from the P2 is rich and loud which is impressive coming from a speaker this size. The P2 comes with a 2” mid-woofer driver making use of an anodized aluminum cone structure as well as a ¾” tweeter which produces smooth high frequency sounds.

The P2 is a great new addition on the Beoplay range. Portable, great sound, long lasting battery life…a must have for anyone passionate about sound!

Beolit 17

The Beolit 17 is a perfect mix of design, portability and great sound.

Design

The square and sleek speaker is wrapped in a metal grille from side to side which hides an impressive speaker array made up of three 1.5” tweeters, two 4” passive bass radiators and a single 5.5” full range driver. The device comes in two different colours; stone grey and natural and feels extremely solid.

Features

The Beolit 17 is light enough to be moved around your house. The edges of the speaker are surrounded in a rubber trim which helps to provide better grip on pretty much any surface it’s placed on. Also, the top of the device is concave which comes in handy especially if you leave your phone placed on the speaker.

Controls are also found on the top of the speaker; power, volume up, volume down, bluetooth pairing and a customisable ‘one-touch’ button. A stylish leather strap is also present to make moving the speaker a breeze.

Sound

The Beolit 17 might have a small footprint physically, but when it comes to sound…the device is huge! Vocals sound great and not like the artist is trapped in a small box…which tends to be the case with other speakers of this size. Bass is also great, with no distortion at high volumes  and the 360 sound sounds very realistic especially when enjoying your favorite live concerts.
