The Inspiration Behind Malta’s First-Ever Beauty Vending Machine

We’ve just seen the launch of Malta’s first-ever beauty vending machine, courtesy of Lucy : Make Up Store, but it’s led to so many questions! Found at The Duke Shopping Mall, will more appear around Malta & Gozo? Where did the inspiration come from? Who designed those gorgeous murals?

A year in the making

Claire Abela, Lucy’s founder, is thrilled at the prospects this innovative approach brings. “We’re waiting to see how this goes, but I have a good feeling!”, she enthused. “After that, we hope to bring convenience to people and have more machines around the island”.

There wasn’t the possibility of opening a store at this point in time, but the machine is as modern as they come and an apt replacement. A project that’s been in the works for over a year, it accepts cash, cards and mobile pay too. It’s got as wide a product selection as possible, but of course, space, for the time being, is limited.

Having said that, there’s still a scannable QR code allowing clients to access the products and relevant details. There’s also a lift within the machine that picks up your product and brings it down gently, ensuring no items are broken in the process!

More than just a machine

While Claire was the brains behind the machine itself, she was joined by marketing coordinator Elisa Savona Ventura, who was heavily involved with the brand and artistic direction. “It’s more than simply a machine”, she explains. “We wanted to create a brand space despite not having an actual outlet, so we have the surrounding area to provide that experience”.

The mural provides a fantastic backdrop to slip in the brand’s vibe, where you can chill, take a couple of selfies and really enjoy what’s on offer. Especially since there’s so much room for expansion in the future.

Speaking of art…

Worth noting is that all of the murals are actual hand-painted pieces by local artist Sefora Mifsud from Eye Attractions By Sefora Mifsud. Though quite a number of artists were considered, the pop art murals that came out are striking, to say the least.

In fact, Lucy : Make Up Store reiterated that they’re looking forward to collaborating with many more local artists in the future. Pairing product innovation with local artists? Gods know we need much more of this.

Since as mentioned there’s no physical store, you can join the Gozo machine’s dedicated page for any questions you may have!
