Malta’s police force has just received their latest upgrade, as body cameras will be added to the officers’ gear. With an investment of over €1 million, this project will result in added security, as well as increased transparency and accountability within the police corps.

Helping both officers & society

Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Dr Byron Camilleri explained how the bodycams will serve as tools that will help police officers in tackling crime, as well as speed up the investigation process, which is of benefit to the wider community.

“I’m happy to announce this investment today so that we can build a safer Malta together”, Dr Camilleri explained. “This project means the Police Corps will be more respected, transparent, accountable where necessary and honest, while also protecting the Corps’ members carrying out their duties”.

First of its kind in Malta

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà was pleased to announce this project as the first of its nature in Malta. From now on, each police officer coming in contact with the public will be carrying a body cam, which carries plenty of benefits.

These cameras will prove particularly useful when audiovisual evidence is required, such as in cases of domestic violence. From a training perspective, footage from these cameras can then be used to show cadets the reality that police officers face on a daily basis.
