Just a year after the EU voted to ditch roaming fees, they have now taken the next step to a better connected Europe. As it stands at the moment, if you go to an EU country and call Malta, you will be charged the same amount as you would have if you called in Malta. But there may still be additional charges if you make a phone call to a foreign number.
On the 14th of November, the European Parliament voted to cap these costs. Making it cheaper than ever before to call or text numbers in the EU. Phone calls are capped at 19c, and text messages will be capped at 6c. These will come into effect on the 15th of May, 2019.
This might seem redundant in the age of online messaging services such as Messenger, and Whatsapp. But not everyone has a stable internet connection, or data to burn. So being able to have an old fashion phone call without breaking the bank is always useful.
