Has 2020 Pushed Fashion Towards Comfort?

Fashion responds to circumstance, and as we’ve often been told this year, current circumstances are unique. With the rise in work-related video calls, we’ve had to look professional even if working from home, which led to a shift in clothing design. We spoke with local fashion leaders Caroline Paris and Robert Agius to see what they made of the change.

Wait, what shift?

The London and Milan fashion weeks reflected the increase in video calls by designing outfits to focus on the upper half. “The top half is always the most eye-catching in any case”, Robert told us, “but it does make sense to focus on it even more now”. Though he’s not so much a fan of massive logos being displayed, let alone centrally, this does seem to be the trend for the immediate future.

The other significant shift is comfort. Not always applicable to the world of fashion, true, but needs-must, right? In fact, Lauren Indvik, fashion editor at the Financial Times, said: “I’ve never seen so many elastic and drawstring waists in my life,”. Caroline concurred, stating “this has been prevalent for a few years now – COVID has simply accelerated these changes”.

“Fashion should feel good – your brain needs to be free to concentrate on more important things, rather than worry about restrictive clothing & footwear.”

Fashion is an extension of self

If there’s ever a time to experiment with style, this is it. “Comfort is invaluable”, Caroline continued. “Simultaneously, we still want to look good. If style is important to us, losing it means we lose a sense of what makes us, us.” Rob, also in agreement, experiments with his style no matter what, but for others not as inclined to change, now’s the time.

“Creativity helps lift the spirit and shake off bad vibes – I think everyone can use that at this moment in time”.

For now, we’ll just have to settle for “luxury looks at home”, but with better times surely on the horizon, there’s plenty of dressing up to look forward to in the future.
