The Malta Police Force has warned the public about an ongoing scam regarding tax refunds. In a Facebook post published on their official page, they stated that “Scammers are claiming that the department is paying tax refunds or payments related to Covid-19 with the intention to obtain the recipient’s personal bank details”.
Victims of this scam have also posted on Facebook groups warning others of this attempt stating that an automated call claiming to be from the Office of the Commissioner of Revenue (2778 2526) claimed that they are eligible for a VAT refund due to Covid-19 measures, and was asked to call back for more information.
People are urged to be careful when giving out personal and sensitive information such as bank details.
We extend Malta Police Force’s plea for individuals to share this warning among your networks.
