Apple has released security updates for iPhones, iPads, Watches and Mac computers following reports of a gap in security exploited by NSO Group, an Israeli security company. What’s the issue exactly though?

Apple’s security note reads: “Processing a maliciously crafted PDF may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.” This all came about following research done by The Citizen Lab, a public interest cybersecurity group that found a Saudi activist’s phone had been infected with Pegasus, NSO Group’s best-known product.

They state that the zero-day, zero-click exploit against iMessage, which it nicknamed ForcedEntry, targets Apple’s image rendering library and was effective against the company’s iPhones, laptops and Apple Watches. Reports suggest that some devices may have been infected since February.

The news comes around the time that Apple announced the new iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad Mini, with further products to be announced later this year. Apple thanked Citizen Lab for the intervention, but also pointed out that these attacks are very rarely widespread and are normally used to target specific individuals.

Do you still feel safe using Apple products or is this a step too far?
