When the latest trailer for Apple TV’s “Foundation” series dropped recently, eagle-eyed local film enthusiasts would have had their eyes open and scanning for some particular scenes which were shot in Malta…but do you know which ones they were?

Small island; big tank

Though it won’t be immediately obvious, as there’s not defining Maltese scenery in the background, the water scenes were filmed in Malta, specifically at the Malta Film Studios and at Fort Ricasoli. It’s what’s within that’s drawing some pretty big productions to Malta.

Back in 1963, special effects producer Jim Hole not only founded the Malta Film Facility but also helped create Rinella’s first water tank. Measuring around 400 feet, it provided sea-like effects, including storms, in controlled conditions. The tank was then further extended in 1979 and is now the biggest of its kind in Europe.

Cool, what’s the series about?

Based on the Isaac Asimov novel, the series tells “the thousand-year saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it.” Starring big hitters like Jarred Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, as Professor Moriarty) and Lee Pace (Guardians Of The Galaxy, as Ronan The Accuser), Foundation’s premiere is set for September 24th 2021.
