A Local Tech Safe-Space For Idea Development Is Launched

Have you ever had an idea that you’d love to test but didn’t have the required place to do so? The Malta Digital Innovation Authority has, with this in mind, launched what is called a Technology Assurance Sandbox, and will help develop solutions for tech innovations.

What is a tech sandbox exactly?

Much like the sandboxes kids play in when they’re young, where they’re allowed to discover new things and interact with what’s around them in a safe, isolated environment, tech sandboxes provide this same environment for innovative tech.

In the digital sphere, the sandbox would provide this secure environment for individuals or companies to develop solutions for technologies like Blockchain and Artificial intelligence.

The way this helps is that solutions can be identified early days when the concept is being developed, rather than having to scurry back to the drawing board at a later stage, the latter, of course, being a far more costly option. The solutions can be adapted in line with recognised standards since they’re being tested in critical environments without the real dangers of going live immediately.

How it works for startups

The process of developing solutions in this sandbox is a gradual one. Governed by MDIA, the platform will guide the solution providers through the process for no more than two years, or rather until the said solution is compliant with international-level standards.

Going through a variety of stages, an MDIA-approved auditor will conduct assessments of the solution, ensuring it’s in line with the controls until it’s worthy of the full MDIA certification.

It’s great for startups because it provides low admin costs and facilitates the procedure of applying for government grants covering the System Auditor Assessment costs. It also provides flexibility in terms of which controls apply at which stage, so development is never rushed and is done at the behest of the applicant.

How to apply

There’s an application form that needs filling in, but before, that you’d do well to read through the program guidelines. It’s a simple three-step process.

The tech assurance sandbox was inaugurated by Minister Silvio Schembri.
