7-year old local lad Dan has started an altruistic 15-kilometre run in a bid to raise funds for his best bud Eric, who suffers from DMD (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy). The muscle degeneration disorder weakens muscles over time and although no cure has been found yet, Dan and his classmates are doing their part to ensure Eric does not miss out on the fun childhood has to offer.

Showing solidarity

Friends since pre-grade, Dan and Eric have been inseparable throughout the years, even when Eric began experiencing difficulties due to DMD. In a show of solidarity, his classmates decided to experience his challenges themselves in 3 ways.

One included wearing weights around their ankles while running in the playground or using stairs. They then had their hands tied while trying to get up from a seated position without using their arms or upper body, and also tried to sit in a manual wheelchair while going uphill.

Dan’s set up a Facebook page, where he posts updates of the progress he’s making with his 15-kilometre run. The funds collected will go towards raising awareness about DMD, as well as the purchase of a new lightweight all-terrain powerchair for Eric. This gadget will allow him to enjoy flexibility and freedom to move without boundaries.
