There’s no need to feel pressured to buy the latest Samsung or iPhone. Here’s a list of smartphones available locally that perform enough smart functions, for less than €150.

No school like old school

If an internet connection is all you require, then the Nokia 220 might be the model for you. Long-lasting battery, 4G connectivity, 0.3MP camera at the back and no selfie camera at the front, it’s small, it’s light and it’s just €79 from Phonebox.

Take it up a notch

Keeping it relatively basic but adding a touch of Android wizardry, comes the Xiaomi Redmi 9. It’s relatively fast, but running 4 apps at the same time might slow it down a bit. 13MP main camera, 5MP selfie cam, and running on an Android 10 system, it’s a pretty good smartphone for €119 at Ultimate.

Unsung hero?

The Samsung A20E is a pretty decent phone for €149. There’s a fingerprint scanner at the back, and NFC capabilities (contactless mobile payments). It’s fast enough to run the daily tasks with ease, but might slow down if you’re playing games on it too. Available from Soundmachine.

By the way…

Check out the Huawei Y5 2019. Decent cameras, decent battery life, facial recognition but no fingerprint scanner mean it’s an OK phone for the price. If you’re looking for an attractive phone for basic needs, it’s available for €149 from Dickens.

No feeling BLU here

A surprise inclusion, as normally the BLU Pure XR would cost double our €150 threshold, but it’s on sale at Klikk for €149, so here it is. 16MP and 8MP cameras at the front and back respectively, Android OS and fingerprint scanner, it’s a premium look-and-feel phone available for a fraction of the price.
