The semifinal Brazil vs Germany has been the most tweeted-about sports event in Twitter history. The social network was inundated with tweets about the shocking 7-1 victory of Germany.

Over 35.6 million tweets were sent about the match, with a peak being reached as Germany scored its fifth goal. In fact the match set a record for tweets per minute; 580,166, when Germany’s Sami Khedira scored.

Twitter has also published a “heat map” of how the Brazil vs Germany game played out on the social network, tracking tweets mentioning key terms around the game. Most tweets focused on poking fun at Brazil. The heat map suggests that Germany top scorer Miroslav Klose, who has already scored 16 goals in the competition, was the most mentioned player in the platform. Up till today the topic is still trending on Twitter and Youtube!

From the beginning Twitter has bet on the World Cup’s success. It has introduced dedicated World Cup features such as hashtags, and a range of “hash flags” to better engage users, something that was swiftly followed by Facebook.
