Household items are goods and products used within households, found in most if not all households. With the advancement of technology within the last ten years; some of the items that could be considered household items could now be considered obsolete or simply not household items anymore.

  1. Home Phone
A fixed landline, while it can’t be considered a thing of the past; less and less people are investing in one when buying a new house. This is probably due to mobile telephony going down so much in pricing and the lifestyle change in the last few years.
  2. Fax Machine
One of the most annoying inventions of all time. More time was spent trying to fax something to someone than actually compiling the document.
  3. VHS Tape Player
Signals recorded on the tape within the VHS tape are able to be played only on a VHS tape player. The advancement of technology has led these to become extinct. CDs are also becoming a thing of the past.
  4. Treadle Sewing Machine
Everyone’s Grandmother had one of these. The Grandmothers of tomorrow will definitely not. This could be due to the fact that the sewing machine was roughly the size of a table.
  5. Casette Player
Casettes are very similar to VHS tapes but smaller. A cassette could be used for sound or video, although they did not last and became irrelevant over time due to technological advancements.
  6. Incandescent light bulbs
Those lights that we hardly see anymore. With a warm sepia glow; while it may give you that homely feeling, they are extremely harmful to the environment and consume a lot more electricity than the new energy saver style bulbs.
  7. Alarm Clocks
When was the last time you woke up to the sound of an actual alarm clock? And not some irritating sound mimicking an alarm clock through your mobile phone.
